Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston AK, AFC (Ret’d) was awarded the Knight of the Order of Australia in January 2015 for extraordinary and pre-eminent achievement and merit in service to Australia, through distinguished service in the Australian Defence Force, continued commitment to serve the nation in leadership roles, particularly the national responses to the MH370 and MH17 disasters, and in a variety of roles in the community.
Station Sergeant Rod Anderson APM, joined the AFP in 1990 and after Recruit Training, was deployed to City Police Station in Canberra where he performed uniform duties as well as working in Communications, Beats and the Accident Investigation Section, investigating serious & fatal motor vehicle collisions. To date Rod has held many different roles with the AFP Canberra and its surrounding region.
In July 2014, SSgt Anderson was deployed to the Malaysian Airlines MH17 aircraft crash in the Ukraine where he performed the role of DVI Forward Commander. As part of this operation he coordinated the recording, packaging and repatriation of human remains from the Ukraine to The Netherlands. He then coordinated the site search effort involving Australian, Netherlands and Malaysian police and support resources. Following the search Phase, SSgt Anderson remained in the position of DVI Forward Commander and oversaw Australia’s DVI operations in The Netherlands.
