Living with COVID19: The New Normal

This year a beta coronavirus since named SARS-CoV-2 originating in Wuhan, (China), spread throughout the world causing a respiratory and inflammatory disease which has become known as COVID-19.  This virus has infected millions of people, hundreds of thousands have lost their lives and many more have had their livelihoods significantly threatened.  This pandemic has disrupted the way we travel, work, communicate and interact at all levels.  The reality that we may never return to life ‘before coronavirus’ (BC) is becoming apparent.  It is time to contemplate the ‘new normal’, life ‘after coronavirus’ (AC).

What does the new normal look like?

During this seminar we will be joined by Professor Stephen Kent, Professor Brett Sutton and Professor Felicity Gerry QC.  We will reflect on ‘where we are now’ from an epidemiological, political and socioeconomic perspective.  We will consider the virology and immunology of SARS-CoV-2 and the prospect of a successful vaccine.  The public health consequences of this pandemic, the government’s response and legal implications will be discussed.  The ‘new normal’ has involved a re-calibration of human society.  It challenges us to reconsider what we value most.

Looking to the future we may explore how to build pandemic-proof infrastructure, living spaces, institutions, healthcare systems, governance and regulatory bodies.  This requires heightened emotional resilience, collaboration and communication skills.

Through solidarity and a renaissance of the human spirit, we embrace life after coronavirus- the new normal.
